One of the issues that is considered to be vital for successful, speedy and assured vehicle electrification is the renewal value of the current car fleet. Northern Lights Energy is in discussion with a number of parties in other countries to improve know-how concerning how to modify petrol and diesel-powered cars and fit them with electric power units, with the aim of carrying out that work in Iceland.
In 2009, experts form Denmark, Finland and the United States came to Iceland to share their knowledge and consider the available options. They drew up a letter of intent, along with two organisations that will apply the experts’ knowledge and assess the will of the Icelandic nation to change the current fleet.
There are no technological barriers to making this change in most vehicles, although financial considerations mean that some models are more conducive than others. The idea is to use standard modification kits that will be adapted for the most popular models on the market. The lifespan of cars will be extended considerably if they are adapted, although some types are less suitable and the cost of changing them may be prohibitive.
Another possibility is to import and adapt new cars; several companies in Europe have experience of this process. Anyone interested in adapting cars on a large scale is invited to contact us at
